HOW DO THEY SCORE? –

March 6, 2025 – A simple handheld device, only powered by a 9-volt battery, is saving lives in Kentucky.

It’s called a neuro-electrode treatment to help battle opioid withdrawal, which hundreds of people have benefited from. “A barrier to a lot of people who really want help and don’t get it is the fear of detox,” Mike Cox with the Isaiah House said. “The fear of withdrawal and the sickness that comes with that.”

Cox said this device can eliminate that fear. As the device can be tailored to each individual and is reusable across patients, they’ve seen it reduce withdrawal symptoms and make patients more invested in their recovery journey.

“These crucial resources set individuals not just up for treatment success but for lifelong success and recovery,” Cox said.

In Scott County and their Detention Center, 16 inmates have been able to receive the treatment, which Jailer Derran Broyles said is the first jail in the country to provide the treatment.

“An incarcerated environment, a jail environment was an ideal setting to use this and offer it to addicts,” Broyles said.
