Feb. 5, 2025 – Kratom contains dozens of psychoactive compounds or alkaloids that are not well understood, and a main one is mitragynine. It binds to the same opioid brain receptors as morphine and, like opiates, can relieve pain or cause euphoria or sedation.

Cox died from consuming products with kratom. An autopsy found fatal levels of mitragynine in Cox’s blood and the cause of her death was mitragynine toxicity. A wrongful death lawsuit claims a Scranton woman died from a product containing kratom, a botanical native to Southeast Asia.

With a scientific name of Mitragyna speciosa, kratom is a tropical tree in Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and Papua New Guinea. Long an herbal remedy in Southeast Asia, kratom leaves can be crushed and ingested via smoking, brewing or capsules.

Not illegal in Pennsylvania, kratom products are sold in stores and include forms of vapes, powders and capsules. Products prepared from kratom leaves are available in the United States through sales on the internet and at brick-and-mortar stores…
